Town Bakar is located on the hill of Bakar Bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, 10 kilometers east of town Rijeka

Bakar bay is the place where the Mediterranean Sea penetrates deepest into the European mainland, and there is closest to the continental Central Europe. The town and bay are surrounded by hills reaching up to 300 m high and very steeply down to the sea.
The whole area is rich in sources of drinking water, and the climate is moderately Mediterranean (sub-Mediterranean).
